You're right, he didn't know (he was not the only one surprised!). What's more, you caught him in an actual prediction, not the usual "it will go up if it doesn't go down" sort of thing.

I am still trying to figure out if Compaq did "stuff the channel" in the sense of puffing up their Q4 profits. You could also make a case for their simply blowing the Q1 forecast. Painful either way, and steve gave no warning, unless you count his buying Dell.

That being said, I still miss his input; it was often valuable, if you could stomach the air of omniscience. I half wonder if he hasn't absented himself so suddenly out of embarrassment at being caught flat-footed.
