Tony,>>>. But, even as Merced(es) speeds ahead, so will the mainframes.<<<

Thanks for taking time out to respond to my clumsy post. I needed a reality check. For the last three years, I have been bombarded with this new visual paradigm and the talk of OOP, IP, Java, IA64, and OSI. The mainframe computer has disappeared from my radar screen. In fact I believe it has disappeared from many of the discussions and curriculums at many of the colleges and universities.

We still have the perception that System 390 and the like have a proprietary scent and lacks an openess veneer. The fact that it lacks an apparent audio / visual interface and modern development tools - we therefore dismiss it automatically and cast it in the mode of a dinosaur.

In any case, to bring this discussion back on topic, Is there a mainframe world north of AS400 and south of system 390 that is fertile grounds for Merced? And how big is that world (market)?

Regards,

Mary
