I think SAND's greatest strength lies in the narrow patent it has on the algorithm it uses to manipulate it's data retrieval process. Software itself could not be patented but unique formulas can be. And that is the key that only SAND holds right now. The concept of having an index on every column in a database is not unique, but full of technical difficulties in implementation. It may be like the RUBIK's cube puzzle with only one solution.

This technology makes the Nucleus ideal for a 'self-tuning' database system. Ironically, technical reviewers for computer magazines are mostly DBA's who may not appreciate the fact that they may someday become obsolete.
