Low-Salt Diet May Not Be Healthiest

March 13, 1998

LONDON - The Associated Press via NewsEdge Corporation : A low-salt diet may not
be so healthy after all. Defying a generation of health advice, a controversial new study
concludes that the less salt people eat, the higher their risk of untimely death.

You need to register (free) to see the whole article, I'm sure it will be in the papers tomorrow.

First saw this on the news tonight, about 90 minutes after my preceeding rant on what BS low sodium guidelines are. This just makes the case even clearer. Of course, lots of MDs will hold to the dogma that high blood pressure is bad, lowering salt intake cuts blood pressure and therefore you should lower salt intake. However, they've never studied the relationship between salt intake and mortality. Now that this guy has studied the relationship and found that low salt diets lead to higher mortality from heart attack and stroke, they still want to resist believing it because it doesn't fit with their intuitive dogma that everything revolves around blood pressure. Just goes to reinforce that medicine is not a science, but an art form and some of the artists are clueless.

Think I'll have a nice salty pickle before bed!
