Dear Nancy:

When Paul says in GAL 5:3 "Standfast therefore in liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free and be not entangeled again with the yoke of bondage"; he is talking about the yoke of the Law; and being in bondage to the Law of the OT.

So, if we are justified by the Law then grace is to no avail; we would not need Christ ( not said for your benefit but for any lurkers)

So Christ came to set us free. Free from what? Bondage to the Law. Why was the Law bondage ? Because men abused the Law for their own ambitions and goals. Likewise grace can be abused also; men can assume that under grace they can sin and get away with it. NOT. Christ will not let it happen.

So this Law; of which if you break one commandment or one of the minor 1200 laws you are found guilty of breaking ALL the Law.

Now stay with me ROM 4:4 " Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace but of debt".

What is the connection. The law represented works and debt; whereas freedom in Christ represents getting out of debt and grace. In the OT you were in debt to the Law; you had to do the works of the Law to escape the penalties of the Law. That is what Christ accomplished; he cancelled the penalties of the Law.

In the day of judgement GOD WILL NOT JUDGE US. Those not under the Christ will be found guilty of breaking ALL the Law. This is splitting hairs but the LAW is what will judge, and condemn. In the same way, a judge on earth may sentence one of the good old boys to 20 years for breaking the law, one of his friends, and not be able to do anything about it; it doesn't matter what he personally thinks about it. The LAW condemns a sinner; not GOD. Never. Yes God gave the Law that condemns but that doesn't make any difference. He wishes that none should perish.

So in the final analysis what does God set us free from in Christ. Not The Law, not liberty from the Law; BUT freedom from "debt" to the law.

Do we adhere to the Law because we are afraid of the punishment of the Law; poor excuse in my opinion.. We love the LAW because there is no debt to it when we fail to keep it..God forbid. We Love Christ and if by loving Him we also keep the Law then more power to us, but our God will never hold us accountable to it. In Christ...gregor
