I have visited Souplantation in San Diego in 1995 and Sweet Tomatoes on Cypress Creek Rd. in Ft. Lauderdale last month and have been impressed by the wonderful food, nice atmosphere and great value. The Sweet Tomatoes is a new location in an upscale mall in an area where alot of retired and elderly persons live. Normally I think of this type of cuisine as appealing more to West Coast youth, so I was quite surprised to see that it was such a big hit among East Coast elders.
Perhaps it was their delicious chicken noodle soup!

The soup/salad bar concept certainly had its origin in California among the veggie crowd on college campuses. It is just now spreading to other parts of the country, though year-round availability of fresh produce at low prices tends to favor southern climes.

Garden Fresh has been doing very well and the stock is in a nice uptrend. People wishing to invest in this concept might also want to take a chance on the turn-around potential of a similar company, Fresh Choice (SALD), which was the first company of this type to go public, but which lost its way and became unprofitable for several years. It recently reported its first quarterly profit in several years.
