I haven't encounter this situation yet but the hardware knows which sector is no longer rewritable on a CD-RW and will return appropriate sense code to the application by the firmware. The CD-R/W is still rewritable until all sector is worn out && all free space are used. Early testing shows that a CD-RW can withstand more than 1000 times of writing which is good for its purposes: Backup, temp storage.

No matter how successful DVD turn out to be, magnetic media can not be fully replaced by DVD/CD-RW because its slow access time. Maybe crystal storage is the future solution but this is talking about years past 2003!
