Let, this is from SAND's white paper:

NUCLEUS FEATURES:

1. The Nucleus architecture uses a column-oriented approach to table storage.
2. The Nucleus architecture separates the data values from their use in tables. These two
architectural features are implemented using two powerful technologies in concert:
3. Bit map arrays are employed to separate data values from their use in tables.
4. The bit map arrays are stored and operated upon in a compressed, encoded format.

Of these 4 features, only the 4th can be made unique and narrow enough to be patentable. While it is true that other technologies could copy the 1st 3 features, they'll encounter the same technical difficulties encountered by SAND's developers in implementing the design. So once SAND's developers discovered the 'HOLY GRAIL', they
got a patent for it. It may be as narrow as a mathematical formula used on the encoded format. Just as cryptographic formulas can be patented.

Whether there will be a better approach, we won't know that. What we do know is that SAND still holds its technology edge, and the only explanation is that the patent is keeping away other competitors from pursuing their research in the same path.

As for the stock, a consolidation in the 10 level is technically very good for the stock. There should be a firm support at 8-9 level which was a resistance it broke through on good volume. I would be a buyer whenever it dips below 10. Reaquire some of the shares I prematurely sold during the run-up.
