I will be 39 in June, just transferred into a Roth IRA, self directed. Actually the transfer date was today. It is my wife's account, approx value $15,000. Yes, it is worth it to switch, especially with the current market. The tax is pennies compared to what you will "make" at age 60. My advise, find the money for the tax now, it will more than pay for itself. My plan is to "safely" invest in some stocks now, than switch to a mutual fund for last 7-10 years, this may change.

I had the same problem at work, poor selections and I didn't know any better. The more I learned about stock market, the more I realized I was getting screwed with companies plan. Chalk it up to "things you father never told you", this won't happen again.
