EPROMs are are quite costly in their erasable, windowed packages. They are reasonably priced in OTP (one time programmable) plastic packages but can only be programmed once. FLASH devices on the other hand can be reprogrammed close to 1 million times and are priced close to OTP EPROM. Atmel's introduction of a microcontroller with on board FLASH memory is a designers godsend. These devices allow in circuit programming and reprogramming of the microcontrollers memory. Previous technology required changing the memory device to alter the microcontrollers program. Much more cost effective if changes need to be made, and they almost always do. Atmel seems to be, if not already, the dominant player in serial EEPROM memory devices. These devices are used to save configuration information in many consumer products like cable boxes, TVs and sterios. Go Atmel.
