IADB puts survey of financial systems on Internet

CARTAGENA, Colombia, March 13 (Reuters) - A survey of financial and capital markets across the Americas was posted on the Internet Friday by the Inter-American Development Bank.

A bank statement, issued as it prepared for the formal opening of its annual assembly in this Caribbean port, said the "unprecedented survey" fulfilled a goal set at the Summit of the Americas in 1994.

By providing a wealth of data on market conditions and laws governing financial transactions in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean, it said the bank was also contributing to the goal increased transparency throughout the region.

"At a time when greater transparency is required for the efficient operation of the world's markets, this database shows the hemisphere's commitment to bolstering public confidence in its financial institutions, said Antonio Vives, deputy manager of the IADB's Sustainable Development Department.

The survey is based on answers to more than 3,000 questions submitted to finance ministries, central banks, bank superintendencies and security commissions in 29 countries that that responded to all or part of the questionnaire before 1997.

It will now be featured on the IADB's home page www.iadb.org. The English-language version will also be available at www.financial-markets.iadb.org and the Spanish- language version can be found at www.mercados- financieros.iadb.org.
