You're mostly correct about one thing when you say: "You're crazy if you think that box-makers "need" Iomega and Zip. It's the other way around. DELL can drop Zip tomorrow and incorporate another, better drive without breaking a sweat. They'll put in whatever they think will help sell computers."

However, OEMs are not likely to jump at HiFD even if it is a better product. It's customer demand that will dictate their decision. It took Iomega quite some time to get the OEMs on board and this was primarily the result of their eventual success in selling so many Zips to end users. The OEMs could have added the Zip to their lines a lot sooner but they needed that all important customer demand first.

Sony is going to have a difficult road ahead in creating this demand because IMO, end users are not likely to purchase the drive as an external unit. Its value is best realized as an internal unit which significantly limits who will consider buying it. Sony is in a Catch-22 situation here: they need end user demand to get it in the boxes but aren't likely to sell mass quantities directly to end users to create the demand they need.

In addition, now that there are 12 million Zips out there and more by the time Sony gets their product out, compatibility will be more of an issue than ever.
