re: Sony HiFD.

I view the relationship between Sony and the other OEMs as hostile, competitors, to the point of enemies.

To Sony a disk drive is one of many products, no big deal, win some lose some, with many of the OEMs, box making is critical to their survival.
IMO the box makers will not willingly give one of their competitors financial support.

For Sony to succeed in supplanting IOM as the drive of choice they would have to stop making boxes. If anything the OEMs will isolate Sony's drive just as they did when the ls-120 and Compaq attempted to control the future floppy.

The #1 computer maker in the world couldn't get a single first tier OEM to accept the ls-120 as a standard equipment.

Sony's drive is DOA

IOM's goal is the replacement of the 1.44 floppy drive, I agree that they don't have to replace the 1.44 drive to be successful but that's not stopping them. They have stated time and time again that their goal is to replace the 1.44 floppy drive.
At some point IOM's Zip drive will be deemed quantitative enough for any company to own while maintaining it's position. I'm holding long.

Approaching 15 million sold ( or more ) and counting.
