Attention Business Editors:

COMAPLEX MINERALS CORP. - NEW GOLD ZONE DISCOVERED ON NOOMUT
PROPERTY

CALGARY, Oct. 17 /CNW/ - COMAPLEX MINERALS CORP. (CMF-TSE) announces the
results of the 1996 Noomut Gold Project. The 40,000 hectare property,
centered 170 kilometers west of the hamlet of Arviat N.W.T., is 100% owned and
operated by Comaplex Minerals Corp. Mineralization along the 40 kilometer
gold trend is related to a major east-north-east trending structure called the
Ironside Shear Zone that was discovered by Comaplex in 1994.
Two zones of gold mineralization; the Napartok Zone and the Ironside Zone
(see map), were drilled this year. Reconnaissance prospecting and geological
mapping has established other areas of gold mineralization that returned gold
values ranging up to 84 grams per tonne gold from surface grab samples.

Napartok Zone
-------------
An airborne electromagnetic and magnetic survey conducted early in 1996
led to the discovery of the eight kilometer long Napartok Zone. Surface work
revealed a gold-bearing shear zone developed near the contact of mafic
volcanic rocks and meta-sedimentary rocks. Strong iron-carbonate -
arsenopyrite - quartz vein alteration associated with the zone is exposed over
a strike length exceeding 4 kilometers with widths up to 75 meters. Seven
widely spaced drill holes targeting geological, geochemical and geophysical
anomalies were completed over 6 kilometers of the trend. The best result
returned 20.37 grams per tonne gold over 3.0 meters (uncut) from DDH 96-6 (see
table).

Ironside Zone
-------------
Gold mineralization at the Ironside Zone is associated with quartz veins
within chert-magnetite banded iron formation. Five diamond drill holes were
completed on this zone. Results include 5.75 grams per tonne gold over 3.0
meters in DDH 96-1 (see table). Drilling has not fully accounted for the high
grade surface samples which were collected over a 1.5 kilometer strike length.

Reconnaissance Work
-------------------
Reconnaissance mapping and prospecting identified several new areas of
gold mineralization. The River Zone is hosted by mineralized sediments and
iron formation near the eastern end of the Noomut Gold Trend. Surface grab
samples returned assay results ranging to 84 grams per tonne gold.
The 1996 results from the Noomut Gold Project confirm the presence of a
major gold-bearing structural break within which several new gold zones have
been identified. Comaplex is convinced this area has excellent potential to
host economic concentrations of gold mineralization and will be conducting
future programs.
