IMHO MSFT doesn't want all of NCR. The interest is in Teradata. SQL Server in it's present and future state is and will be no match for Oracle, IBM, Sybase, Informix and Redbrick in the decision support environment. Hence the interest in Teradata for the long pull. MSFT has no interest in NCR's self-service[ATM] or scanner businesses. NCR's computer business, except for the Teradata piece, has failed to live up to the expectations of management. Solution? Entice MSFT to buy Teradata, induce IBM to buy the self-service business when the Diebold relationship folds at the end of this year, find a buyer for the scanner business and leave Solectron holding the bag on the computer manufacturing business. Given the Compaq/DEC deal, NCR management is probably drooling over the possibilities. Management is holding converted AT&T stock options at $44/share and 1996 options at around $33/share. The stock has to do much better than it has for Lars & company to make any decent sort of return. It will be extremely interesting to see stock performance when Q1 figures are released next month. That is, unless the boys from Dayton can pull a rabbit out of the hat in Beaverton. As I said before, this is JMHO, totally unsubstantiated by any facts whatsoever.
