RESEARCH ALERT- Merrill ups Lucent EPS view NEW YORK, March 13 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch [AMEX:OPG - news] boosted earnings estimates on Lucent Technologies Inc for the 1998 and 1999 fiscal years based on indications that its Network Systems unit is performing ahead of prior expectations. -- In a research note, analyst Joe Bellace said he was raising his 1998 earnings estimate to a range of $3.10 to $3.20 per share from $3.05 to $3.10 previously. He boosted his 1999 view to $3.75 to $3.85 from his prior $3.70 to $3.80 view. -- The analyst said his conversations with Lucent management suggested that Network Systems has been fueled by stength in switching, wireless infrastructure, software and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), a technology that multiplies the capacity of fiber-optic cables. -- Bellace said he maintained his accumulate rating on the diversified communications equipment supplier.
