A few pointers that may help you in your search. I had posed similar queries previously, and some replies make sense. I must say that I admire the tenacity with which you have engaged the thread, on your debut! Welcome.
With the commoditization of the retail PC business, and to some extent the low end commercial PC business (read lower margins, more players and competition)I think you will agree that CPQ's focus needs to change.
My understanding is that CPQ benefits from acquiring DEC because of :
1: DEC's multi-platform service and consulting group/ existing customers
2: DEC's cash hoard
3: Future apparently cheap access to alpha chips, Intel and Merced chips as a result of the DEC vs Intel lawsuit settlement as CPQ focuses on high end computing solutions
4: intellectual property / patents

Now whether this enhances "shareholder value" is not a given, but I feel it is a move in the right direction. Net assets will go up in the long-term....but if you want a guaranteed share price boost you take your post DD chance.
