Compaq, IBM and others announced, approximately one year ago, that they were going to implement BTO. I haven't seen any evidence that they made any significant progress. In the mean time, Dell improved their inventory turns even more. Can anyone explain how Compaq and IBM might challenge Dell's direct business model without killing their retail distribution business? I don't see how Compaq and IBM will be able to challenge Dell in direct sales, and I see no evidence that Dell intends to sell through retail channels.
