Don/Sour Gas

I'm not sure what the problem with sour gas would be.
At one time sour gas wells were shut in, but now they are sought out.
The sour gas (SO2) is made into sulphur and sold to make fertilizer.
Ten years ago I would see large fields of sulfur two stories by a quater mile beside the gas plants.
They are now all gone, apparently the gas companies made a fortune from the sulfur, often more than they made from the gas.
