Quite simply, there are NOT enough bodies to go around and it is not because there are a bunch of IT people sitting on their couches refusing to work (i.e. get paid, eat) because they can't always get the rate they want. That's ridiculous. I think you have injected a little frustration about your rates. Rates have stabilized and even dropped of somewhat, but that is only temporary.

I am one of the larger bread winners in the IT industry and employ a lot of folks. The industry is in an EXTREME pinch right now. I have had to resort to paying kids with 1 year out of college as much as 70K. Even with an infusion of foreign nationals, the market will be tight. Not all of them will be IT and quite frankly, although these guys do get work it is not as much as you think and they do not last. There are language barriers and racial prejudices (not PC but true). Also, the myths about our science/math degree counterparts in other countries being better at IT are being dispelled. It's just not true. There is no replacement for American ingenuity and greed.

Yes, employers are trying very hard to reduce wages and fees for IT professionals which have skyrocketed and one of the biggest ways that they is recruiting on the Internet. This is the one thing that should scare you about IT Staffing companies. They are getting squeezed out by an employer's ability to find the same people just as easily.

The good news is that IT staffing is just a small part of the industry. There is plenty more to go around and these companies are getting smarter and better everyday.
