Dvorak's scenario would be quite a bit different than what I expect. First, I don't think Intel could buy Compaq in the current political environment. Even if they could, there seem to be more reasons against it than for it. Second, I think it would be much harder for someone to out-OS Microsoft in the near future than to out-CPU Intel. I think it's harder to conjure up a successful operating system than many people realize. I do think that Alpha will be competitive with Merced for longer than previously estimated.

Of course, I could be completely wrong :-)
