To All:

All news releases are submitted to the companies that do assaying, drilling or have control over chain of custody, before news is put out. If you see Chain of Custody, then you may be assured that the companies that were in charge of it, have given permission to have their name used along with COC. Chain of Custody is a legal state in which samples are taken under direct supervision of those who have been paid to keep the COC intact. Samples are sealed and sent to labs without their being re-routed to the company who owns the property and paid for the samples to enter into a COC mode.

Behre-Dolbear drilled and collected the samples without any Naxos personnel being present. They also videotaped parts of it. Behre-Dolbear used CMRI to process and store the material (under COC). CMRI has maintained the COC since the first samples arrived - if that would not have been the case, then they would not have stated COC. After CMRI processes the material it is sent out to the testing labs under seal. Wherever the samples are sent, then the receiving parties have to inspect the containers and ascertain to their good judgement that the seals have not been broken and that the samples have not been tampered with. If it appears that the seals have been broken, then it is the obligation of the receiving party to reject the samples. If the seals are not broken, then the receiving party will take the COC samples under their custody, signing for the material. Once under their custody, it is their obligation to safeguard the samples, and when they finish their testing, to certify it as COC. For this reason it is called Chain of Custody --- independent parties maintain a chain of sealed custody samples to ascertain their intactness.

Previous to Bre-X, there were many companies that didn't use COC. Now it is a growing norm in exploratory companies that want to have no shadow of doubt about the validity of their samples.
