I think there's a zillion varieties in the family. You can find a fennel field at the corner of Bridgeway and Nevada in Sausalito with a potent licorice nasal assault team. Its 'licorice' effect differs slightly from that of anise. A local company makes ravioli stuffed with artichoke hearts and flavored with fennel from the area. Sounded good, so I tried some. Ptui! Really bad recipe&#151the licorice was beyond overwhelming. Reminiscent of ramming a raw fennel stalk up your nose whilst chewing a gooey, ouzo-drenched, pasta-like substance. All the vegans here love it because of its neuvo-trendy sophistication. With the proper marketing, these people would eat up my Used Kitty Litter Oatmeal Bars. I'll make a million. Go public. Buy my own kingdom. -MrB
