Washington-based Iridium, which should be the first of the so-called big low-Earth-orbit systems in operation, plans to start service of its first generation of satellites Sept. 23. Iridium and Motorola Inc., the project's prime contractor and majority investor, will spend several hundred million dollars this year planning and ordering parts for Iridium Next Generation.
