That phrase FUN and EXCITING Comdex stuck in my mind, too. Someone here suggested that at the only thing Iomega can look forward to at Comdex is the Japanese announcing some new product to wipe them out. One gets the feeling that KE was hinting about something quite a bit more positive than that.

And speaking of that post about the Japanese. I forget who said it (though I believe his initials are probably BS) but someone was opining that now that Iomega has "given away" the Zip technology to the Japanese, via the MCI deal, the Japanese will improve the product and come out with a competitive device.

What, the Japanese couldn't have just bought a Zip drive and taken it apart? They had to get a licensing deal to grasp the technology?

Also "the Japanese" aren't a single business unit. Mitsumi HAS come out with a competing product, even if they're not shipping in quantity yet. MKE has the LS-120. So are we to believe that MCI licensed the Zip only to get their hands on the technology? Why, so they can come up with a new product and, instead of leveraging off the massive world-wide marketing Iomega has done, compete with them? That seems far-fetched.

More likely they have faith in their manufacturing expertise, they believe they can make Zip drives cheaply, and that they can cash in on the demand already created for them. Since they're going to be paying Iomega to do this, it's fine with me.

I for one, am really looking forward to Comdex.
