Notebook PC makers line up
for mobile Pentium II
By John G. Spooner, PC Week Online
March 13, 1998 4:24 PM PST

The parade of vendors planning to introduce
notebook PCs based on Intel Corp.'s upcoming
mobile Pentium II processor keeps getting longer.

Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Dell
Computer Corp., Gateway 2000 Inc., Compaq
Computer Corp. and Digital Equipment Corp. will
join IBM, NEC Computer Systems and
Hewlett-Packard Co. in introducing notebooks
using the 233MHz and 266MHz mobile Pentium II
processors that are set to debut on April 2.

According to sources, Toshiba will launch a new
high-end 266MHz Tecra 780DVD, which will be
configured with a 13.3-inch XGA resolution display,
64MB of RAM, an 8.1GB hard drive and a
DVD-ROM drive. The unit will be available for about
$5,500, the sources said. A Tecra 780CDM, which
has the same features but without the DVD drive,
will be available for a slightly lower price, they said.

Compaq plans similar high-end models for its
Armada line. The Houston-based company will
introduce a Pentium II-based Armada 7700
configured with a 13.3 inch screen, sources said.

Dell aims to be price competitive when it
introduces a 266MHz Latitude CP configured with a
13.3-inch screen and new hard-drive password
security features for less than $4,000, according to
sources. A 233MHz Latitude CP with a 12.1-inch
screen will be priced less than $3,500, the sources
said.

The Round Rock, Texas, company will go even
lower on its Inspiron notebook line, which is aimed
at small and medium-size businesses and
individual users. A 266MHz Inspiron configured with
a 13.3-inch screen will start at less than $3,300,
sources said.

Gateway, meanwhile, will bring out new models in
its Solo notebook family. The North Sioux City,
S.D., company will launch a Solo 9100LS
configured with a 14.1-inch screen, 32MB of RAM,
4GB hard drive and DVD-ROM drive for about
$4,500, sources said. A new 233MHz Solo 5100
with a 14.1-inch screen will start at less than
$3,000, sources said.

For its part, Digital plans to roll out new HiNote VP
700 notebooks, according to sources. Although
pricing for the new units wasn't available, the
Maynard, Mass., company is expected to cut
prices steeply on current Pentium MMX-based
HiNote VP and HiNote Ultra 2000 notebooks
following the Pentium II introduction.

HP is expected to launch a new ultra-thin
OmniBook model, its version of Mitsubishi Electric
Corp.'s Pedion, next week. The Palo Alto, Calif.,
company plans to introduce a new OmniBook
family based on the Pentium II processors this
spring.
