Without a communist bogeyman abroad the States seems to have turned in on itself and we are witnessing political self destruction. If the public gets on with business as usual one can hardly blame them. The Independent Prosecutor Statute means that there is open house on elected (and unelected) officials all the time. Many of Clinton's aids from the first term had to seek other, more lucrative, employment, just to pay their massive legal bills. Memos have to be shredded, the whole environment is impossible. It was the same for the previous administration. In the meantime the world's only superpower, tries to hold itself out as policeman to the the world. The situation in the Gulf may turn out to be a watershed, and a salutary tale about the limitations of power. Hard to proceed without allies Suharto's defiance of the IMF, seen to be a proxy for the US, may be another example
