BroadBand Technologies Joins Universal ADSL Working Group
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--
Consortium Working to Accelerate Deployment of High-Speed
Internet Access
BroadBand Technologies, Inc. (BBT) (Nasdaq:BBTK), a leading provider of broadband and wideband access systems for the worldwide telecommunications market, today announced that it has joined the ranks of other leading technology providers by participating in the Universal Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Working Group (UAWG). This consortium, led by PC industry leaders Intel, Microsoft, and Compaq along with telecommunications leaders Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, GTE, SBC Communications, Sprint, and US WEST, is working together to accelerate the deployment of high-speed Internet access for mass consumer markets.
BBT has a wealth of experience in designing and deploying end-to-end, high-speed data access systems. It has developed DSL Ethernet Modems/Routers and Network Interface Cards that are deployed worldwide in labs and trials. BBT looks forward to contributing this experience and knowledge base to ensure the rapid success of the UAWG initiative.
"BBT is a recognized contributor and leader in the development, promotion, and deployment of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology," said David E. Orr, President and CEO of BroadBand. "We have consistently provided the dedication and commitment of resources to enable new technologies in the local loop to meet the needs of Internet and data traffic growth. Membership in UAWG demonstrates this continuing commitment to develop appropriate technology and products for rapid deployment."
The UAWG's goal is to propose, through the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a simplified version of ADSL that will deliver high-speed modem communications. The results of the UAWG's work will be to catalyze rapid deployment of broadband access systems to support growth in the Internet and other related high bandwidth services. The proliferation of Universal ADSL will also expedite the need for deployment of advanced fiber-based access systems which would also benefit the telecommunications industry as well as residential and business customers.
As Internet and data traffic grows in the public network and new competitors enter the local market, the lines between traditional loop electronics systems and broadband access systems are converging. BBT has a strategic initiative to introduce new products that capitalize on the growth in this $2 billion loop access market. These new products will seek to leverage BBT's core competencies in ATM, broadband access, and xDSL as well as intellectual property licensed from other companies to position BBT for future growth.
About UAWG
The Universal ADSL Working Group, composed of leading PC industry, networking, and telecommunications companies, is developing a set of contributions building on the present T1.413 standard intended to create quick deployment and adoption of Universal ADSL. With the goal of providing consumers with the assurance that products and services will work together, the UAWG's work will complement currently planned equipment deployment for full-rate ADSL and help to provide a seamless migration path from today's modems.
