This Network Computer or Internet Appliance is dead in the water. The champion of this idea is Larry Ellison of Oracle and that company has the hands-down worst track record in the industry for graphical tools for use with its most-excellent relational database products. We have a man who thinks that computers are for displaying forms on databases.

The public laughter from several respected industry leaders was quite understandable. You can get a powerful general purpose computer to do all of the functionality of an NC or IA for just two or three times the price with NONE of the draconian limitations. The bar is being raised again with the advent of way cheap and effective 3D.

Their goal is to get the Microsoft monkey off peoples' backs and get them hooked on Java instead. I for one do not want to use software which is at least 10 years behind what Microsoft has on the desktop. The real fly in the ointment for them is that Microsoft is building tools which the armies of Visual Basic, Visual C++, Delphi and Java programmers can use to connect existing software to the internet -- which includes the thousands of man-years of Intel and Microsoft specific software..
