Ken, you are right about upgrading software for a significant number of desktops, but in my experience, this is accomplished from a central server. Also, in an engineering environment, we had draftsmen, designers, application engineers, research engineers, accounting people and controllers, secretaries, and field service personnel so it was practical for each group to have their own software and usually their own server. That way all could have the pertinent application software.
Also, if for some reason the server was down, people could continue working (unless they kept all their files on the server). In the old days, IS people would come around and upgrade each PC individually but that was long ago. Now the servers are used not only for backup, but for downloading individual application software for new users. Of course I'm speaking of Dell servers.
