Italtel is a telecom equipment manufacturer which is a joint venture between Siemens and STET.

Deutsche Telekom was never forced to buy from german manufacturers. They just have a strong business relationship with Siemens. Nontheless they buy a major part of their equipment from the french Alcatel Alsthom.

I think the eventual success of ADSL is still pretty much up in the air. Last year I had big investments in ADSL companies which were drastically reduced when Texas Instruments bought Amati.
I still have not figured out if the technical problems - mainly handling of long or bad lines and crosstalk are sufficiently under control to allow widespread deployment of ADSL services. And while we are waiting alternative broadband solutions which might be better suited to internet access over a phone cable are developed by Paradyne and Nortel.
From the small ADSL companies I considered Netspeed to be the most interesting after Amati disappeared as an independent company.
