I agree with you that, assuming a requirement for software companies to provide a separate version of their software for each platform (with associated shelf space in computer stores), it is not practical for anyone to break the current MSFT/INTC monopoly on PC standards.

If MSFT were able to put together a version of NT that would not require users to buy specially recompiled software, then anyone could use the wide variety of software currently available for the INTC platform. The question is whether this version of NT would be significantly faster on another platform than it is on INTC's.

What do you think? On the INTC thread, the belief is that a universal NT would have to effectively run in emulation mode, slowing it down dramatically. Are there any ways for MSFT to get around this problem so they can take control of Intel's hardware standards?
