Albert, here is what RS&Co. had to say about the Amati/TXN announcement when they sent a blurb on Aware:

AMATI AND TI TO COLLABORATE ON DMT-ADSL; SHIFT IN STRATEGIES;RAISES QUESTIONS ON AMTX-MOT RELATIONSHIP; POSITIVE FOR AWARE/ADI STRATEGY

* Amati and TI announced this morning an agreement to collaborate on the development of a DSP=based chipset solution to implement Amati's DMT ADSL solution. Interestingly, the DMT implementation produced by the TI relationship will not be fully standard compliant, although Amati holds patents on the ANSI standard implementation of DMT. This suggests that time to market and flexibility are as or more important than to-the-letter standard compliance and further calls into question the value of Amati's DMT patents.

* Amati has been partnered with Mot semi to develop DMT-based ADSL chipsets and has also entered into an agreement to develop modems based on those chipsets. In our view, Amati's turning to TI raises significant questions regarding the effectiveness of Mot's single chip transceiver strategy and its ability to bring product to market in a timely fashion. The TI agreement envisions a DSP-based solution with DMT functionality in software versus the highly integrated ASIC solution being pursued by MOT. Mot's solution appears to sacrifice flexibility for cost and standard compliance, and it is apparent that Amati's seeking to broaden it's product offering.

* We believe this apparent shift in Amati's strategy represents a positive for Aware, which remains on track with ADI to bring its DMT-based ADSL chipset to market in volume early next year and has emphasized software-based flexibility in its porducts from the start. Aware and ADI have been collaborating on the implementation of DMT technology in silicon for more than three years, which can be characterized in our view as middle ground between the low cost, inflexible MOT solution and the high cost, highly flexible TI solution. ADI announced in August that sampling volumes of the chipset would be available before year end. This news speaks to our contention that Aware maintains a significant time to market advantage over other competitors in the DMT market.

******

Reminder: RS&Co. was Aware's underwriter and they cover Aware but not Amati. I am not sure if the analyst is all that objective. But can anyone confirm his claim that the TI implementation isn't standards compliant? Techie
