Open Text Launches Livelink Pinstripe - The First Internet Search Site Designed Specifically for the Business Community
New Site is the Source for Business Knowledge on the World Wide Web
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 16, 1998-- Open Text Corporation (NASDAQ:OTEXF - news) today introduced Livelink Pinstripe (http://pinstripe.opentext.com), the only Web search engine designed specifically to meet the needs of business users. Providing powerful new ways to search for information, Livelink Pinstripe returns highly focused results, indexing only Web pages that are pertinent to business users.
While it is available free to anyone with access to the Web, Livelink Pinstripe is also integrated with the next version of Open Text's industry-leading collaborative management system Livelink Intranet (scheduled for release in mid-1998). For all users, Pinstripe guarantees the most current information available on the Web by ''crawling'' over a million pages a day and automatically refreshing its databases more than twice as often as most search engines.
''Business people are often frustrated by the overwhelming amount of information they have to sift through when performing searches on the Web,'' said Abe Kleinfeld, Open Text's Senior Vice President of Marketing. ''Other search tools generate large amounts of irrelevant information - resulting in wasted time and energy. Livelink Pinstripe solves this problem by only searching through the major business pages available on the Web.''
Noted for its power and precision, the Open Text Livelink search engine that powers Livelink Pinstripe is able to treat the pages in the index as if they were divided into separate categories, or ''slices.'' The result is that users can search a specific industry segment for the information they need, without having to sift through hundreds or even thousands of meaningless hits. For example, one can search on the Machinery Manufacturing slice by simply selecting a radio button and then providing any additional search criteria. The resulting pages are already pre-sorted and return hits only from that particular industry.
Using Livelink Pinstripe's unique slice search technology, searches can be performed on one of over 150 pre-categorized groupings, enabling the power user to drill right to the information on any particular business topic. For those who prefer simplified searching across multiple databases, the Quick Search form can be used. Lastly, for more complex queries, the Power Search form can be used.
In addition to offering extensive search capabilities, Livelink Pinstripe also aggregates additional business content, including information from such partners as Forbes, Deja News, Net-Temps and WhoWhere.
Additional content includes:
Finance: Check stock quotes, track your portfolio, mutual funds or check companies online. News: Search current business events or read the Forbes Daily. - Employment: Search for a job online, or check for available
candidates.
Companies/People: Search companies or people online, including URLs, e-mail addresses or phone numbers. Travel: Check flights, car rental agencies or hotels online as well as weather and currency exchange rates. Discussion: Search Newsgroups or read articles by your favorite business columnists.
''This partnership enables Open Text customers to instantly access the Deja News Web site, thus opening up the unbiased, third-party conversations that are so important to creating an effective online community,'' said Bill Townsend, Vice President, Business Development, Deja News. ''Deja News has had a long relationship with Open Text and we are thrilled to extend our work together into new directions with this partnership.''
Visitors to the old Open Text Index home page who seek information outside of Livelink Pinstripe's business focus will be directed to The Mining Company network of specialized sites for over 500 topics, including more than 300,000 specially selected and sorted links covering all interest areas. ''Specializing and slicing are smart strategies, and the timing is just right -- business users need fast, reliable access to actionable information without the noise and the nonsense,'' said Scott Kurnit, founder and CEO of The Mining Company. ''Livelink Pinstripe is another example of how less really is more.''
Livelink Pinstripe is available immediately as a free service on the World Wide Web at pinstripe.opentext.com.
