Microsoft has failed in a few ventures but it's been so long I forgot what they were. Oh wait Bob was a joke but that didn't really hurt them. Intuit successfully held their ground against MSFT, that's why BIll and co. tried to buy them. Of course now hasn't MSFT offered MS Money 97 for free? I believe a number of years ago they wrote off the possibility of attacking Autodesk's hold on the CAD market and Adobe's position in DTP however I think within a year or two they may show renewed interst in these markets.

Novell has to compete with NT but considering their history I know where I would place my bets.

I think the next market MSFT will (well..is tacking) try to tackle is the game market. They bought a 3D game maker about 1 1/2 months ago and their current offerings are starting to get noticed.
