IDT in manufacturing pact with IBM
SAN FRANCISCO, March 17 (Reuters) - Integrated Device Technology Inc. will announce Tuesday a deal with International Business Machines Corp., in which the computer giant will manufacture IDT's Intel-compatible processors.
IBM will manufacture IDT's WinChip C6+ microprocessors, in a three-year agreement,at its Burlington, Vermont, plant.
The pact will give IDT another manufacturing source for its processors, which it launched in September. IDT is targeting the market for sub-$1,000 PCs and the sub-$2,000 notebook market with its processors, which it says consume less power.
"This agreement provides us with the necessary capacity and flexibility to meet the volume requirements for all of IDT's various product lines," said Len Perham, IDT's president and chief executive, in a statement.
IDT, based in Santa Clara, California, entered the market to develop Intel-compatible processors in September, where it competes with makers of Intel clone chips, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and National Semiconductor Corp.'s Cyrix unit.
The company has so far been making its WinChip processors at two plants, in Hillsboro, Oregon, and San Jose, California. IDT will continue manufacturing product at its twoplants. <IDTI.O> <IBM.N>
