"MCCAIN INTRODUCES BILL TO ALLOW BELL COMPANIES INTO LONG DISTANCE Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John McCain (R-AZ) Mar. 16 introduced his promised bill to free Bell companies from the Telecom Act's restrictions -- including the ban on long distance service -- within a year after enactment. In its findings, the Telecommunications Competition Act of 1998 says that "existing regulatory devices no longer work" and that antitrust issues should be handled by the Justice Department, with the FCC confined to "the regulatory perspective."
