You also need an encoder. MPEG-1 is not a big deal, and MPEG-2 won't be a big deal in the future.

You can slap on a CD-R for not much more than a hard disk, record in MPEG-1, and have archival storage. MPEG-2 would require DVD-RAM, which is still too expensive for settops -- a 4 gig hard disk is also expensive, but admittedly less expensive than than DVD-RAM. And a CD or DVD approach lets you play discs on your system. Maybe we'll see a hard disc in the near-term, but I think it will be a short-term product until the price of DVD-RAM drops significantly.
