Glenayre Western Multiplex Partners With Intraplex To Offer Turnkey Digital Microwave Solution For Broadcasters March 17, 1998 9:27 AM EST

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenayre Western Multiplex, a worldwide provider of wireless telecommunications equipment, announced today that it has entered into an alliance with Intraplex, Inc., the broadcast industry's leading supplier of digital transmission equipment. The companies will provide broadcasters with high-quality, fully digital T1/E1 STL solutions based on spread spectrum technology. Widely used for PCS, cellular and data communications networks, spread spectrum provides highly reliable, point-to- point wireless links without requiring an FCC user license.

The solution, which will be available through the global Intraplex dealer network, will integrate the Intraplex STL PLUS and Glenayre Western Multiplex's LYNX.sc spread spectrum radio to provide an alternative to congested analog STL frequencies, conventional analog leased lines or public T1 circuits. LYNX.sc provides completely bi-directional channels for transmission and backhaul of uncompressed digital program audio, plus voice and data over microwave links. This "plug and play" solution offers easy installation, bandwidth efficiency and the high levels of transmission reliability associated with Intraplex STL links.

A studio communications system has been in place since Dec. 1997 at Boston's WSJZ-FM "smooth jazz" radio station (96.9), using a spread spectrum link between the station's studio in Brighton, Mass., and their transmitting tower, located on the roof of Boston's Prudential Center.

"WSJZ's listeners are extremely discriminating when it comes to audio quality," said Milford "Smitty" Smith, vice president of engineering for Greater Media, WSJZ's owner. "Despite the fact that the Prudential Center is a very hostile environment for RF interference, our link has functioned flawlessly to date. We have the benefits of a fully-digital STL/TSL without the costs associated with a public network T1 link or a much more expensive conventional digital microwave radio system."

Graham Barnes, vice president of marketing for Glenayre Western Multiplex, explained, "The digital audio STL application provides an exciting new market for our spread spectrum radios. There is a need for a digital wireless solution linking broadcast transmitters and studios. We are particularly pleased to be entering this new market with a strong and capable partner in Intraplex."

Spread spectrum is a unique form of digital microwave radio originally developed for use by the military. Operating under Part 15.247 of the FCC's rules, spread spectrum users are exempt from licensing requirements due to the equipment's low-power density. As a result, spread spectrum radio can be installed quickly without time consuming and expensive frequency coordination, while providing a full T1 digital signal meeting all standards.

By using special coding techniques and "spreading" the transmission signal to minimize any possible interference, the LYNX.sc is able to provide extremely reliable links in the 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz bands, without requiring a dedicated frequency. Spread spectrum has become an essential component of many commercial networks for voice and data communications.

"We're extremely pleased to have Glenayre Western Multiplex, the acknowledged leader in this field, as our partner for broadcasting applications," said Bill Rollins, president of Intraplex. "By combining their expertise in spread spectrum with our products, experience and dealer network, we can offer broadcasters yet another path to the many benefits of digital transmission. The 950 MHz STL band is becoming increasingly crowded, and spread spectrum technology helps broadcasters eliminate the need for extensive frequency coordination."

Intraplex, Inc. (www.intraplex.com) develops and markets integrated digital access devices for wireless communications and broadcast networks whose users require exceptional audio quality, efficiency and operational reliability.
