Arnie, finally back home to my user friendly bonehead computer.
Talked to sales reps in SLC and Denver. Currently no shortage of phones. Can be hooked up in 2-3 days. Very few problems with phones, as far as they know. When the i600 was released at beginning of year had some problems with both supply and quality. This apparently has been fixed. SLC is trending 150% of sales goals as of two weeks ago. Denver is over goal, but no disclosure of how much. Both reps have been told that new sales programs in April and May will really stimulate sales and in the words of of SLC rep, "cause the new adds to really increase." They would not discuss what new sales program entailed.
What was interesting in talking to these sales people, was how closely they follow NXTL stock. Both owned stock individually and as part of company plans. That is, in my view, a very good sign. One of the reps came over from a competitor because most of his proposals were being undercut by NXTL and the competitor was losing significant business to Nextel.
Stock price trend seems to be following the route of last August and September. Creeping up in anticipation of Q1 new add's. I agree with you that adds will be in the 400K+ neighborhood. No specific info just gut feel.
Arnie, Wayne Perry is a master negotiator and very smart guy. Tax lawyer (NYU 1976), and the mastermind behind the McCaw Cellular/T merger. Went to T after the merger and is now back on McCaw team. If an acquisition does take place he and McCaw will make sure that, NXTL gets top dollar. Moreover, if a proposed merger or buyout is announced look for a bidding war. Like you and others have stated, Nextel is in a unique position not economically duplicable at this point.
