Hitachi to phase out Japan DRAM output

TOKYO, March 17 (Reuters) - Hitachi Ltd plans to concentrate its
dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chip production on ''certain
overseas plants', eventually phasing out domestic DRAM output, said
company president Tsutomu Kanai.

Kanai told Reuters in a recent interview that DRAMs, the main
memory of personal computers, have already passed their heyday.

'The days when the DRAM business was the centrepiece of the
Japanese semiconductor industry have gone,'' Kanai said.

'Japanese chip makers will never thrive on the DRAM business.''
