( BW)(NCI)(NCII) NCI now shipping Flashback Mobile Office
Business Editors
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1996--
Combination portable digital audio recorder & PCMCIA card allow mobile PC users to record and send voice mail over Internet
NCI (formerly Norris Communications Inc.) (NASDAQ:NCII) is now shipping the Flashback Mobile Office, which includes the latest version of the award-winning Flashback hand-held digital voice recorder, a palm-sized three-ounce unit based on removable flash memory with a 25 percent improvement in sound quality. The Flashback records voice input instantly, performs variable-speed playback and includes on-board voice editing. Files are stored in an industry-high ratio of 18 minutes per MB, making the Flashback capable of storing 18 minutes (1 MB) or 36 minutes (2 MB) of recording time on ultra-compact, removable flash memory SoundClips. By removing the SoundClips and inserting them into the Flashback VoiceLink, a card that plugs directly into a Type II or Type III PCMCIA slot of a notebook computer, voice messages can be sent via Internet E-mail 20 times faster than transmitting conventional sound files to any other computer with a Flashback VoiceLink. Files can also be converted into standard WAV audio and sent to any sound-enabled, Intel-based computer. "This product is one of the most flexible and efficient ways to communicate," said Bob Root, chief executive officer and president of NCI. "The spoken word can be recorded at a minimum of 200 words per minute, which is at least ten times faster than the average 20 WPM speed that most executives type. "The Flashback lets you communicate using your own voice so the receiver hears your tone and inflection, thereby eliminating misunderstandings. Because its portable, you can record messages anywhere so you aren't tied to a phone line. And you save time and money by sending compressed voice message files over the Internet." The product was designed for mobile professionals and executives who spend a lot of time out of the office and require a better way to communicate with customers, peers and office-based support staff. Professions that fit this profile, include salespersons, corporate trainers, doctors and lawyers. While the Flashback unit features editing functions, including insertion and deletion, voice messages can also be edited using the Windows-based software recorder/editor included with the Flashback VoiceLink. Recorded files are saved in compressed format, sent in compressed format and decoded by another Flashback VoiceLink at the other end. "Removable flash memory is another extraordinary feature of this product," said Root. "Imagine a microcassette recorder without removable cassettes. Most digital memo taker products don't feature removable media and don't allow virtual storage and archiving of important sound files. NCI has a patent on removable flash memory giving the Flashback Mobile Office a competitive edge against all other digital voice recording products." The Flashback Mobile Office is available now from distributors, resellers, value added resellers and chain stores worldwide at a suggested retail price $549.95 for the version with the 18 minute soundclip. With a 36 minute SoundClip, the product is priced at $599.95. NCI also offers a Mobile Office Professional with two VoiceLinks including software. The Mobile Office Professional with an 18 minute SoundClip is priced at $649.95 and $699.95 with a 36 minute SoundClip. Interested parties should contact NCI at 800/916-6267 or 619/679-1504.
