Well, I can tell you that my site gets it's quotes from CBOE, and their site has been responding very slowly this past week. On a stock with lots of options like CPQ, it can take a long, long time before my site responds. (We're talking minutes here.)

When you use a program to access CBOE's quote site like I do, you can see some extra headers and stuff that are inserted by their programs. It looks like they're using a Windows NT server with a Visual Basic-based database lookup for doing the quotes. No wonder it's slow! I'll bet they can't handle more than 10 hits/second without overloading their server, and that's nothing for a site like theirs: they should be able to handle much higher capacity, given who they are.

Last week I was involved in a series of meetings at my company about planning for future load capacity on our web/cgi servers. We hit 300 concurrent users in the middle of the day now, and our machines are getting loaded. We came up with a system design that will let us support thousands of concurrent users. If our customer base grows to meet the capacity we're planning, our website will be able to swamp the entire internet, unless it's capacity increases to match us. This is exactly the sort of system CBOE should have.

Doug.
