Avid Cinema compresses with "interpolation" then line-doubles the image to achieve full-screen video. Read crummy quality. Its specs say 30 frames per second, but no mention of whether that includes all 60 fields. If it only uses 30 fields per second, the result will look somewhat strobed, like those CD-roms videos that don't look quite right. Basically, your brain is only getting half of the visual information. I'm not sure whether Avid Cinema does indeed only use 30 fields/second, but its become common practice to boast of 60 fields/second if manufacturers are claiming anything close to "real" video. The least expensive 60-field VHS quality card on the market is currently around $1,000. So at this price point, quality concessions were obviously made.

I haven't seen the image quality, so I'm basing my assumptions on these facts. Of course, you should see it for yourself to judge whether its acceptable to you. The price is certainly right from a consumer standpoint. I come from a professional broadcast background where even VHS quality is considered unacceptable for anything other than dubs to watch at home, so I have a bias.

P.S.: I discovered the meaning of your signoff this morning when I called my sister who lives in Tewksbury. She says they have gotten 9" of rain in the past 30 hours. Hope you're staying afloat!
