Re: Components

Question: What's the advantage of using a TV/FM board in your machine versus a separate stereo system?

I've been on a bit of a buying frenzy in the last 3 months, because I've been ramping my consulting business, my web design business, and also building boxes for friends.

The last box I built as follows:
Motherboard: Abit AX5 -- $120
CPU: AMD K-6 233 3.2/3.3V -- $148
CPU fan: Biggest honkin' mutha I could find -- $16 (trust me its HUGE)
Memory: 32MB NEC 10ns SDRAM DIMM -- $50
Case: Generic ATX -- $60
HDD: Maxtor 8.4GB UDMA -- $290
CDROM: Toshiba 24X IDE -- $60
Floppy: Teac -- $19
-----------------------------------
Total before ST: $763

Not bad eh? <g> I can add a 15" screen and all the accoutrements like keyboard, mouse etc. and keep it under $1k, and you still have a pretty damn fast machine with a GIGANTIC disk.

I find that for non-graphics intensive apps 32MB does the job. I do a lot of graphics work so I run all my machines at 64MB; I would have more but the 430TX chipset can't cache more than 64.

I also bought a new notebook a couple of weeks ago, which inspired the last article I posted to my site:
users.deltanet.com

That was big bucks though. I don't even want to say how it cost <G> but I need it for my biz. I really like having it though. But the design could be better.

Other bits and piece I've bought recently:
Matrox Millenium II (Dealing with the drivers for this is a pain, let me tell ya)
10Base-T 8 port hub (for my LAN, will probably upgrade to 100Base-T shortly)
32MB SO-DIMM (small-outline DIMM) SDRAM for my notebook, bringing it up to 64MB

Planned procurement activity in the near-term:
Replace the 2GB disk in my notebook with a 4GB disk (need space for my graphics work and to hold client projects)
100Mb ethernet stuff
Another Millenium II (for doing multiple monitors under win98)
Another monitor (for above)

I'm starting to get that Pentium II itch. <gg> I currently have:
Pentium 133
Pentium 200MMX
Pentium 200MMX (in the notebook)
AMD K-6 233

I made the mistake of playing with a Pentium II 300 system I built for a friend ... pretty swift <gg> now I want one.

God bless,
PX
