To all.... I ran across this on Business Wire earlier today. Sounds
like good news for Ampex's DST product line. Just a reminder that
Ampex is more than just Keepered Media.

Good luck to all.

Legato Systems Announces Major Performance Enhancements with
NetWorker 4.2.5 for UNIX

Business Editors & Computer Writers PALO ALTO, CALIF. (Oct. 21) BUSINESS
WIRE -Oct. 21, 1996--Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a leader in
the enterprise storage management software market, today announced
NetWorker 4.2.5 for UNIX, covering the AIX, Solaris and SunOS
platforms.

NetWorker 4.2.5 for UNIX will deliver unprecedented performance and
usability from a client/server storage management application, and has
the ability to offer high performance and reliable solutions for even
those customers with the most demanding storage management
requirements.

"NetWorker 4.2.5 is targeted at customers deploying enterprise-class
storage management systems. For the first time, distributed, LAN-based
storage servers can take advantage of high speed devices as well as
existing silo tape libraries, significantly improving overall
performance," said Kent Smith, chief operating officer of Legato Systems,
Inc.

NetWorker 4.2.5 for UNIX takes advantage of NetWorker's parallelism and
OpenTape architecture by further optimizing NetWorker's already
outstanding data transfer technology, thereby increasing performance.
With support for AIX 4.2 and Solaris 2.5.1, plus numerous enhancements
designed to improve reliability, Legato is confident customers will find
NetWorker 4.2.5 fast, scalable and reliable.

Customers who either require or have an existing silo or library will be
able to take advantage of the optional Silo Support Module offered by
NetWorker 4.2.5 for Solaris and AIX. This module allows NetWorker
servers, in conjunction with appropriate library software, to utilize
StorageTek's Automated Cartridge Storage Library Subsystem or EMASS'
DAS.

Multiple NetWorker servers can be attached to the silo or library, with
each NetWorker server managing a separate partition within the silo or
library in cooperation with the library manager. The silo retains the
ability to be shared with mainframes, other applications or other UNIX
servers. There are two stratifications of the Silo Support Module --
one allows NetWorker to manage from 1-128 volumes (or pieces of media)
within a silo or library, and the other allows NetWorker to manage an
unlimited number of volumes.

Companies who need to transfer massive amounts of data in as short a
time span as possible can now take full advantage of the highest speed
storage devices using Legato's optional High Speed Device Support Module
for NetWorker for Solaris or AIX. The module provides the necessary
support for attaching an AMPEX DST-310, DST-410, IBM 3590 with Magstar
or Sony DTF to a NetWorker server.

The enhanced performance of these devices is 9-18 MB/sec. and
NetWorker's parallelism feature provides the ability to use these drives
at their maximum speed.

"Finally we are able to address the near-crisis need to back up massive
amounts of data in a shrinking backup window. With databases doubling
in size every two years, customers are facing a real data management
dilemma. NetWorker coupled with Ampex's high capacity, high performance
DST tape drives can deliver "virtual disk" performance to demanding
customers. Now regularly scheduled full backups at a rate of better
than 11MB/sec. per drive are possible, and lightning fast restores are a
reality.

"Using a server such as Sun's ULTRASPARC 4000 with one or more DST
drives will yield astounding results. Speeds up to 19.2 MB/sec. were
easily achieved with two drives, and better than 22MB/sec. obtained when
configured with high performance disk arrays. That's half a terabyte in
six hours and a full terabyte in six hours when configured with four
drives. Amazing!" said Linda Sarles, vice president sales and marketing,
Ampex Corporation. Pricing and Availability

Legato Systems' NetWorker 4.2.5 is now available with pricing beginning
at $6,000. Silo Support will be offered at $9,500 for the 1-128 volume
module and $30,000 for the unlimited volume module. The High Speed
Device Support will be offered at $6,500 per server (all prices are U.S.
list). Background on Legato Systems
