Doren, I agree SCSI is better, I use a scsi jaz and it is fine, I also have a parallel zip, it is fine but slower. SCSI rules.
I thought all serious WIntel boxes used fast and wide SCSI devices. You can buy motherboards with SCSI II and III on the board like IDE for fast stuff, and I suspect that the fast Intergraphs use those.

It is quite likely that the G3 is faster in real life?, I have seen the commentary enough times to suspect there is some validity in it.
There are even faster CPUs like Alpha, where are they now. So speed is not the answer, universality is the answer.
