I think that an IBM buyout of AMD is a very real possibility, and one that would be most detrimental to Intel if IBM was serious about taking back a (big) piece of the uP market. Alternatively, they could let AMD fail and buy the K-6 design rights (and hire the people) following AMD's bankruptcy.

IBM with ownership of the K-6 would be more trouble for Intel than any competitor to date, especially if it was coupled with a determination to take on Intel on an ongoing basis. I'm not necessarily saying that it would be successful, but it would be more trouble for Intel than anything so far.
