So far, IBM has had the opportunity to purchase 2 x86 design outfits; Nexgen and Cyrix. They decided against it. IBM is making money fabbing their chips, why would they want to enter into a CPU war with Intel? They could buy a smaller design team, e.g. Metaflow which SGS Micro Electronics has invested in.

I think that your wish for an IBM buy out is a pipe dream.
