Thanks for the excellent post.

So proprietary code is the big issue... and I can see that a corporation would be hesitant to 'tinker' with their code during normal operations.

Then, the concept of a total hardware redo would seem to be contingent upon also having new Y2K-compliant code written or available, which one could test on an isolated system prior to committing oneself to the plunge. Fraught with uncertainty in any case.

And even that would only solve the internal problems...

Maybe DELL is going to buy Oracle (VVVbg - remember, the rumor started here!)
